Mark R. Burns, MSc. CQP MCQI, MIAM,
IRCA Principal Auditor QMS, ASME NQA-1 Educator and Lead Auditor
Mark is the Managing Director of Total Quality Solutions Limited and has over 30 years of experience in quality assurance and quality control. He has been a member if the Chartered Quality Institute since 1990 and a former Member of the Institute of Asset Management. He is a Chartered Quality Professional (CQP) and a former Corporate Member in these respective institutes. More recently he has become a member of ASME. Throughout his career Mark has been intermittently involved with the review of both new and existing standards.
He has a wide range of industrial experience across a variety of products. He has provided services to the automotive, aerospace, space, defense and nuclear industries, including, Military Projects, Land Rover Discovery 3 & 4 and other Premier Marque brand vehicles for their Electrical/Electronic Architecture and Risk Assessment, and European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS).
Mark’s most recent experience has been within the nuclear industry for which he has worked as a Quality Manager for both military and existing power generation for the current UK fleet and nuclear new build (NNB). His nuclear power station experience is based on the UK’s Pressurized Water Reactor at Sizewell B that has been built to ASME Code and the Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors within the existing UK fleet. More recently, he has worked on the new build nuclear projects for the Evolution Pressurized Water Reactor and the advanced boiling water reactor power station based in the UK (HPC).
He has managed the quality aspects for projects on Nuclear Island, Mechanical Annex and Balance of Plant. The projects which he has provided quality support for include all aspects of a Nuclear Power Station, these include the following disciplines.
- Civil Engineering – Rebar Support Procurement and Supply Chain Management, inspection and release to station, Inspection and sign off of structural steel lifetime quality records.
- Mechanical Engineering – Pipe work design, radiation containment doors, manufacture and installation activities on site, procurement of a wide number of Items and services, maintenance and commissioning activities.
- Software Engineering – Witness testing of C&I software for the operation of mechanical equipment in the turbine hall.
- Electrical Engineering – Conducting the quality assurance management of electrical installation work and ensuring the competency of contractors.
Mark earned his master’s degree in quality assurance management from Portsmouth University and has earned Institute recognition through completion of the Chartered Quality Institute educational program. These qualifications are enhanced with the International Register of Certified Auditors (IRCA) Certified Principal Auditor grade for ISO 9001 and by ASME for the NQA-1 Lead Auditors Qualification.
Audit Experience
Mark started his auditing career in 1990 in the Automotive industry working with the ISO 9001 standards and Industry standards such as Fords Q1 award. He has since gone on to use his audit skills in each of the industries he has serviced throughout his career this include ISO 14001, ISO 45001, TS 16949, ISO 9100, AQAP 2110 and most recently NQA-1. Mark has performed well over 750 audits in course of his career, these include 1st, 2nd and 3rd party audits managing audit teams that ranged in sizes of 1 to 6.
About The Course
The course will start with an introduction to the nuclear safety culture, each day will commence with a Nuclear Safety Moment. This is a key element that all contractors must engage with the site licence holder to demonstrate and feed down into the lower tier suppliers and demonstrate safe working behaviours and practices to their customers and regulators. This will benefit those new suppliers to the nuclear industry.
The bulk of the course is designed to focus on the four parts of the NQA-1 standard in particular the Mandated Part I and the 18 Requirements for the quality management system and Part II supporting requirements for Part I. The course then will touch on Parts III and IV non-mandatory elements of the NQA-1 Standard.
The course will also cover Commercial Grade Items and Services, 10 CFR 21 reporting of defects and non-compliance, and QA requirements for using supplier accreditation for calibration or testing services. Finally, the course shall look at the Certification Process to achieve “N Certification” from ASME.
Interspersed throughout the course notes a large number of images taken at HPC and satellite manufacturing locations to keep the candidates engaged and to provide an opportunity to ask any questions, there are also a number of Quite Interesting (QI) Slides that will provide some really good facts about the scale of the HPC Site.
The course will culminate in a 20-question multiple choice and written answer exam which is open book and will have a duration of 90 minutes. The pass mark for the exam is 80%, this is a pre-requisite to attain for those who wish to participate on the NQA-1 Lead Auditor Course.
